Promotional shoot for their debut film together ‘To Have and Have Not’

“You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and… blow.” From the moment you watched a young and sultry Lauren Bacall wistfully utter those words to the rugged Humphrey Bogart you knew that their love affair would last far beyond the end title and that “Bogie and Baby” would become synonymous with true love.

The young Lauren Bacall, then still known by her first name Betty, was a statuesque beauty, with an alluring innocence and a sweet sultry voice. But in 1943 her career had yet to springboard into the success which it would become. It was director Howard Hawke’s wife who noticed the gorgeous young woman, staring out from the glossed cover. It was one look at the cover of the latest issue of Harper’s Bizarre which led to her first featured role alongside one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors, Humphrey Bogart.

Humphrey Bogart, at the age of 44, had by that time already reached a phenomenal success. He was cast to play opposite Lauren in 1944’s, To Have and Have Not, which Lauren was not too enthused by. Not immediately drawn to the rough and grizzled Humphrey Bogart Ms. Bacall was hesitant and none to impressed. But Humphrey must have already known, “I just saw your test,” he said. “We’ll have a lot of fun together.” At the tender age of 19 Lauren had little experience with film and even less with romance gradually, working side by side in their first film the two fell hopelessly in love with one another.

There was however one hurdle they would have to overcome. At the time Bogart was trapped in a loveless and an infamously hostile relationship with his notoriously alcoholic wife, actress Mayo Methot. The loyalty to his, albeit estranged, wife left Bogart suffering tremendous guilt and that same loyalty tore at Humphrey’s desire to dedicate his life to his new love.

Fortunately, Bogart escaped the torture of his previous marriage and began his new life with Lauren on May 21, 1946. The two were married on a picturesque farm in Pleasant Valley, in Richmond County Ohio. The two were inseparable and intoxicated with love for one another. There are no words to describe the kind of chemistry the two exhibited in real life. While they fell in love before our eyes over the course of multiple films including, 1946’s The Big Sleep and 1948’s Key Largo, the onscreen action couldn’t hold a shadow to their real life adoration for one another.

Love that Changed the Nation: Coretta Scott and Martin Luther King Jr.

There are few people who can say they made a dramatic and historically significant change in the world, there are even fewer that can say they did it as a pair. If ever a couple could say that their presence in this world made a difference it was Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. It’s hard to live a day when the influence of this historic couple cannot be felt, not only in the United States, but abroad. Martin Luther King Jr, the leader of the Civil Rights Movement which swept the nation in the 1950s and 1960s could not have done so were it not for the unfailing dedication and commitment of his wife Coretta Scott King.

The couple met in 1952, Martin Luther King was pursuing his PhD. in Theology at the University of Boston while Coretta was attending the New England Conservatory of Music. A friend gave Martin Luther King Jr Coretta’s phone number. It was that first phone call that sealed the rest of history. After only about an hour Martin had made up his mind “So you can do something else besides sing? You’ve got a good mind also. You have everything I ever wanted in a woman. We ought to get married someday.” And on June 18, 1953 the two were married by Martin’s father the Reverend King Sr. on the lawn of Coretta’s parents’ home in Marion, Alabama.

While many didn’t recognize the ferocity with which Coretta was involved in politics and activism until after MLK’s death the two were instrumental in the movement. She played critical roles in the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955, she journeyed to Ghana to mark that nation’s independence in 1957, traveled to India on a pilgrimage in 1959 and worked to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

From the platform of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Martin Luther King was able play a pivotal role in the end of legal segregation and the enfranchisement of minorities with the Voting Rights act of 1965. He went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. MLK himself declared “If I have done anything in this struggle, it is because I have had behind me and at my side a devoted, understanding, dedicated, patient companion in the person of my wife.”

The two worked together and built a family as well as helped shape a nation during a critical point in its history. For more on these two triumphant figures of the Civil Rights Movement and American history: Biography.com and Stanford.edu

Hollywood couples these days are hard to gauge, there’s no knowing how long one romance will last or if marriage is just around the corner. There are however, couples which we could only conjure up in our teen romance dreams which have lasted longer than anyone could have imagined. Sarah Michelle Gellar, the kick ass girl next door who we know best as Buffy, was always the girl we looked up to. And Freddie Prinze Jr., who I’m sure we all remember as the sensitive and caring teenage heart throb, turns out, is everything we ever day dreamt about. The two Gen-Y staples of the 1990s teen epic and rom-com community actually got married. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane. It feels almost as if this adorable couple is sealed in a time capsule, tightly sealed and holding all of our memories of bleached spiked tips and mom jeans.

The two first met back in 1997 on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer, though Sarah Michelle didn’t make it out alive and Jennifer Love Hewitt got the guy (darn her and her big beautiful eyes) a romance was sparked. And the romance grew and grew while the two continued to star in film roles and TV appearances. We can’t forget her in Cruel Intentions or her leading role on the WB’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” though she finally called it quits; much to our disappointment, in 2003. Freddie Prinze Jr. we all remember from when he played Zack in She’s all That, back when we wore messy overalls hoping he’d come along to take off our glasses.

After years of dating the two finally tied the knot upon their return from shooting the film which would forever cement as the ideal pair. They portrayed the ultimate power-couple, Daphne and Freddy, in 2002’s Scooby Doo!  “If you love someone and you choose to spend the rest of your life with that person, that’s your partner in every way.” Said Gellar about their relationship.

The two have kept out of the spot light, happily together, having their first child Charlotte in 2009 and recently welcoming their second baby in 2012, Rocky.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, were a couple for the ages. Having met on the set of Cleopatra, the two appropriately played Marc Antony and Cleopatra, two larger than life personalities with fame, charisma and power. The couple lived in the public eye and their love was notoriously one of passion! These two Hollywood stars lived through the golden age of cinema and would be known for their troubled but hopelessly devoted relationship.

Elizabeth Taylor has come to be known one of the most famous and widely admired dark haired on screen sirens. Her charm and va va voom held captive full movie theater audiences and had captured the attention of the press. Richard Burton had too been known as an actor both on screen and on stage. When the two met it was like the confrontation of two dueling forces, sparks flew and explosions abounded.  When the two met they were married, but not to one another, confronting scorn from the media and traditional institutions for their adulterous beginning. Yet despite what others predicted about a short lived fling, their extramarital escapade led to a marriage which would last over ten years!

For years they appeared on screen together. From their first joint on screen debut and blockbuster “Cleopatra” to their all too real nightmarish portrayal of a troubled partnership in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” their mutual energy was explosive. But their chemistry and bond was effervescent, vibrant and alive. There was no doubt that these two gargantuan personalities were able to see beyond themselves and madly love one another.

Their romance littered the papers and was scattered across the tabloids. As one of the first widely publicized couples of the new era of information their love was lived out in the public eye. The volatile quarrels may have made headlines, but it was their ardent and passionate love story that has endured in our minds.
